Hiring Expert Web Developers at Hashrocket
Here's a short and sweet version of a listing I'm going to start posting on various job boards tomorrow. I'm looking to hire up to four experienced web developers in the next couple of months, bringing our billable consultant headcount up to 20 people:
Qualified candidates will:
- Have at least 5 years of serious web development experience (experience with Ruby and Rails is of course a big plus, but not absolutely necessary for the right person).
- Be "true believers" in Agile methods, including story carding, pair-programming and test-driven development.
- Relocate to sunny Jacksonville Beach, FL where Hashrocket is headquartered and currently building out brand-new, kick-ass office space. We do provide generous relocation assistance.
Besides working in an awesome location with some of the best Ruby programmers in the world on cool, progressive projects with the best clients, some of the benefits of working for Hashrocket include:
- Competitive salary
- Company-paid medical/dental coverage
- Full 401k matching up to legal limits with immediate vesting!
- Three weeks vacation, plus paid time off for conference attendance (Rubyconf, Railsconf, etc)
- Up to 8 hours paid time per week allotted to "other activities" including open-source hacking, writing books and blogs, education and other internal initiatives
- Strong emphasis on culture and lifestyle, overtime/weekend work strongly discouraged, frequent team outings and social events
- Regular opportunities to work with some of the most experienced Rails experts in the world via our 3-2-1 Guest Star program
- All our work is done on-site, so no travel requirements (great for road-warriors wanting a break)
I encourage you to ask questions and I'll keep a close eye and participate on the comment trail for this post.

Should those of us who haven't had professional experience using Agile methods bother applying?
In my case, I've been learning to apply Agile methods in my spare time. However, the companies that have previously employed me were very waterfall and very averse to change.

Grant: my name is Ben and I am employee #5 at Hashrocket.
1) If you don't apply I can guarentee you that you will not be hired
2) If you are passionate about Agile methods and have met resistance from those comfortable with Waterfall or other development methods, welcome to the club... taking the initiative to apply Agile in your personal projects shows passion, working professionally with it is the next step, so I encourage you to apply if the opportunity sounds like a fit for your next career move.

Can you tell me a little bit about Jacksonville and the surrounding area?
I'm from Austin, TX and I am wondering how it compares. I seem to remember someone from the Austin Rails group moving into the Hashrocket fold, so maybe they can chime in.

"Competitive salary" does not mean anything. What is the actual salary or salary range?

@Theo Mills: Jacksonville has a small indie community and some culture, but frankly it is tiny compared to Austin and is part of the "bible belt" in its popular values and political leanings.
Hashrocket isn't actually in Jacksonville, which is very important, since most of us are extremely liberal and progressive.
Everyone (except Ben) lives at the beach, which is about 15 miles east of the downtown area and its own community. The beaches area has a very nice lifestyle and is highly influenced by the influx of tourists and transplants from all over the world. I wouldn't call our cultural assets world-class, but we do have a nice selection of restaurants and nightspots to choose from, as well as some great live-music venues such as Freebird.
We have great weather. It doesn't get very cold in the winter, and the ocean breezes temper the otherwise hot and humid summers. The beach itself is a good destination at least 10 months out of the year, and the mild winters mean that you can catch sun on the beach even during peak winter months. Spring and fall are arguably the nicest times of year -- having a convertible top vehicle is highly recommended.

@Glomek: Competitive salary does have a meaning, but since you asked, our developer salary range is 60-120k, has a lot to with relevant experience and payraises are merit-based.

A lot of candidates have responded from overseas. The answer is that we are not currently considering people who would need work visas to relocate here. We are still at an early stage in our growth where the extra expenses involved do not make financial sense.

Any more rural areas to live within driving distance of Hashrocket? Would prefer not to live at the beach or a downtown area, prefer a country-style location, but don't mind a long commute.
